Admission Policy
Applicants are evaluated primarily on the basis of academic ability sufficient to complete the educational program in which they are enrolled. Other factors that are taken into consideration are personal and professional goals that are compatible with the objectives of the educational program selected.

Admissions Eligibility

Bachelor's Degree

  1. High school diploma or its equivalent, e.g., G.E.D.;
  2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale; and
  3. One letter of recommendation verifying that the applicant is academically qualified to complete the BBA program within the allotted time span.
Master's Degree
  1. Baccalaureate degree in business administration or management* from an accredited or state-approved college or university or the equivalent in the case of foreign institutions.

    * An applicant whoe baccalaureate degree is not a business administration, economics, or management-related discipline, is required to complete prerequisite courses in business administration.

  2. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  3. One letter of recommendation verifying that the applicant is academically qualified to complete the MBA program within the allotted time span.
Doctorate Program
  1. Master's degree in business administration or management from an accredited or state-approved college or university or the equivalent.
  2. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or higher.
  3. Two letters of recommendation verifying that the applicant is academically qualified to complete the DBA program within the allotted time span.

Enrollment Procedures
Applicants are required to submit the following documents to the Director of Admissions:
  1. Application for Admission form
  2. Application fee (non-refundable)
  3. Proof of high school education or its equivalent for undergraduate degree
  4. Official transcripts from colleges or universities attended (or arrange to have sent from each school attended).
After a thorough review of documents submitted by the applicants, the Director of Admissions will make the final decision regarding acceptance or denial. If accepted, applicants will receive an official notification in writing from the Director of Admissions. A special screening or aptitude "test" may be required in cases where other information is not deemed sufficient by the Director of Admissions.

International Students
All international applicants are required to submit the following:
1.
One set of official transcripts in English from all colleges and universities attended for transfer students or high school diploma or its equivalent for admission to undergraduate programs.
2.
Completed application form.
3.
Statement of Financial Support.
4.
Official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score if enrolling in programs offered in English language.
5.
Application fee (non-refundable).

Successful applicants will be issued the acceptance letter and begin taking distance learning courses. When ASU receives approval from the Immigration and Naturalization Service and issues Form I-20, students will be able to obtain a non-immigrant student visa for entry into the United States.

Special Admission
Special students are those who are admitted as non-degree students and are not interested in pursuing a degree or certificate program. Their main interest lies in self-fulfillment and development, electing to take only a few specific courses as auditors.

Provisional Admission
If an applicant's cumulative grade point average is lower than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale but is above 2.7 ("B-") but wishes to apply for admission to ASU's D.B.A. program, he or she may submit an application for admission, which includes an additional letter of recommendation from a manager of a business enterprise, verifying that the applicant is well-qualified and motivated to complete the D.B.A. program. The Admissions Evaluation Committee, composed of the Director of Admissions, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Department of Business Administration Chair shall review the application and may admit the applicant on a provisional basis. Provisionally admitted students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for the first three courses before he or she will be allowed to continue. Provisionally admitted students are allowed to take no more than three courses at the same time until probation is removed.

English Proficiency Requirement
ASU requires a minimum of 450 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for admission to undergraduate program and 500 for all graduate programs. However, those with the TOEFL score of 400 may be admitted to undergraduate programs conditionally and will be required to take English as a Second Language courses. Only those students whose TOEFL score is higher than 450 will be permitted to continue after two terms.

Transfer Credit Acceptance Policy
Credits earned in other institutions may be considered for transfer credit as follows:
  1. Forward official copies of transcripts to be evaluated to the Admissions Office.
  2. Submit a copy of catalog descriptions of all coursework to be evaluated.
  3. The only courses which will be accepted are those substantially comparable to ASU courses or those courses that fulfill general education requirements, and the grade of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for baccalaureate degree and 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for graduate degrees.
  4. The maximum number of credits accepted for transfer is the maximum transfer credits permitted by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education at the time of admission. (During the current academic year, the maximum number of credits accepted for transfer is as follows:
    1. Up to 90 semester units for baccalaureate degree;
    2. No more than 6 semester units for a master's degree; and
    3. Up to 30 semester units for doctoral degree.)
  5. Acceptable transfer credits are those earned from postsecondary institutions approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education of the State of California (or the equivalent) or accredited by accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. In the case of foreign institutions outside the United States and Canada, transfer credits may be accepted if the institutions from which credits are earned are equivalent to those that are Bureau-approved or accredited.
  6. Credits earned from non-accredited institutions may be transferred after successful completion of 9 semester units with a grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or "C") for BBA degree and 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for MBA and DBA degree.

Credits for Experiential Learning
General Policy

American States University's (ASU) policy for awarding credits for prior experiential learning is in compliance with the guidelines established by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education, State of California. ASU may award credits for prior experiential learning without requiring a course challenge examination, provided that applicant submits extensive documentary proof that demonstrate:

  1. The depth and length of experience is equivalent to college level education.
  2. The learning experience and length of experience is equivalent to college level education; and
  3. The credit awarded for the prior learning experience directly relates to the applicant's degree program or is applicable to satisfying graduation requirements.
Procedure for Awarding Credits

ASU's policies and procedures for awarding credits for prior experience are as follows:

  1. Only in those fields of study that approximately parallel the courses offered at ASU and student thoroughly documents all pertinent experiences.
  2. Evaluation of documented prior experience by a qualified faculty member, giving careful consideration in reference to a fair balance between theory and practice.
  3. The maximum number of credits awarded for prior experiential learning shall be six semester credits for the first 27 semester units, and additional six credits for the second 27 semester units.

Re-admission
Any applicants who have been admitted into American States University and have not enrolled at American States University one year after the admission must apply for re-admission.
