Distance Learning |
|
At ASU, you can complete every aspect of your degree program online through ASU's website and via e-mail.
Even your administration, registration and book buying can be done online.
So you can participate in class any time you want, day or night.
You will be required to login four days a week to maintain attendance requirements,
but you choose the times that are convenient for you.
Throughout each course, you will receive lectures,
questions and assignments from your instructor, then review them at your convenience.
Because all information is in electronic form, you can save it, print it, and you never have to take lecture notes.
Your professor will provide you with continual guidance and feedback.
The Online / Web-Based program does provide the utmost convenience
and flexibility,
but it also requires a high level of self-discipline.
|
Online/Web-Based Distance Learning will challenge your ability to quickly assimilate new ideas,
evaluate complex data, think creatively, and communicate effectively. It will also be extremely rewarding.
|
Students report that in each course they spend 15 to 20 hours a week reading, working on assignments,
contributing to discussions, and conducting research.
|
Although you'll have the flexibility to study when and where you want,
you will need to dedicate significant time to your degree program.

History |
|
Distance learning in the United States began in the late 1800s
with correspondence courses, such as the one offered by Isaac Pitman in 1840 to teach his system of shorthand.
Columbia University and other colleges offered radio courses in the 1920s and 1930s and televised courses
in the 1960s. Since 1890, about 100 million Americans have taken courses at a distance,
including celebrities such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Walter P. Chrysler, Walter Cronkite,
Barry Goldwater, and Charles Schulz.
Online learning, televised classrooms, and home-study courses have revolutionized the way
instruction is delivered, making it possible to earn college credits from the comfort of our homes
or offices without regard for time and geographical barriers.
Whether you are a professional who can study for a few hours on an airplane or during a lunch break at work,
or a young mother who can "go to school" after the kids are asleep, distance learning may be your answer to
completing a degree or acquiring certification.
If you have a computer with a modem, a television set, or a mailbox and a bit of self-discipline,
a diploma may be closer than you think.
